Supporting young people in their communities

Escape Parenting

The Escape Parenting Programme takes a problem solving approach towards improving relationships between young people and their families.

The programme, which is aimed at parents of adolescents, helps parents to look at the causes of the difficulties they face and encourages them to consider taking a different approach with their child. It does this by helping parents understand their child's behaviour and its effect on others and by exploring the parents' own attitude towards challenging behaviour.

Over a period of 12 weeks, the programme builds up a strategy for families to use in their everyday life, giving parents a six point plan to approach the difficulties their child may present.

Outcomes

On completion of the programme, parents have reported:

  • Improved communication
  • The ability to recognise triggers and patterns of behaviour
  • Improved attendance at school
  • Improved behaviour at school
  • Improved behaviour at home
  • A reduction in offending behaviour
